About Me
I like to introduce myself the way Reid Malenfant introduces himself at the beginning of Stephen Baxter’s Manifold: Time.
“You know me. And you know I’m a space cadet.”
That’s because the most obvious thing you’ll notice, if you browse my site and my work, is that I love science fiction. But I’m so much more (thanks, William Shatner, I stole that line from “Real”). While science fiction is responsible for so much of who I am and how I see the world, I spend most of my time in everyday life here on Earth. I write a lot about business, and also about culture, editing magazines such as The ACCJ Journal for the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan and INTOUCH for Tokyo American Club.
Yeah, I’m not Japanese but I’ve lived in Japan almost my entire adult life—more than half my years at this point. That would be 50 years for those counting, 26 in Japan. I’m American by birth but, like so many expats, my real identity is hard to put a finger on. Caught between cultures—and worlds—my views don’t fit neatly into the silos of our social media world. I believe it’s important to think for yourself.
Here on Random Fluctuations, I share thoughts on a range of topics (hence the title) as well as my many podcasts and what I’m working on day to day in media and publishing. I hope something here piques your interest.
As Spock almost said, read long and prosper. 🖖
